Ban on protests reversed in Tunisia

Tunisia’s Islamist-led government in a major climbdown yesterday reversed a ban on protests in the capital’s central thoroughfare after an outcry over a police crackdown on a demonstration there.

It also launched an inquiry into the crackdown. Police used tear gas and batons to disperse protesters who stormed Tunis’ Habib Bourguiba Avenue on Monday, in defiance of a ban on rallies in a street that was a focal point of protests that ousted Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali last year.
