A SECOND day of clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces blocked a major road in Bahrain yesterday.

A 16-year-old youth and a police officer were killed in clashes on Thursday, the second anniversary of the Shiite-led uprising against the Sunni al-Thani dynasty’s rule on the Gulf island, which has a population of 1.3 million mainly Shiite citizens.

The continuing protests add to pressure on Shiite opposition groups engaged in talks with the Sunni-led government to ease the crisis. Hard-line factions object to the talks and want to topple the western-backed al-Thani monarchy.
