AWAY from the tourist and property hotspots, many of Bulgaria's eight million population must cope with dire poverty and high unemployment. Many still travel by horse and cart.

Poverty has contributed to a crisis in the childcare system and Bulgaria now has the highest proportion of institutionalised children - estimated at up to 20,000 in total - in the whole of Europe.
