Work begins on £2.5m revamp of listed church

A CITY-CENTRE church was today holding a ground-breaking ceremony and service of blessing to mark the start of work on a £2.5 million project to transform its A-listed building into a community hub for the 21st century.

Nicolson Square Methodist Church is already used by 22 groups and the basement cafe serves more than 100 meals a day. The revamped premises will allow it to welcome more groups and expand its work with the community.

Deacon Belinda Letby, minister at the church, said: “The new premises will be a major step forward in our efforts to be a welcoming, inclusive Christian community in the heart of the city.

“We look forward to working with partners to develop services that will meet the needs of young and old alike and particularly the most vulnerable”.
