Woman’s death ‘not due to lack of care’

A SHERIFF has ruled that the death of a woman who had to have her embedded denture removed in hospital was not due to any lack of care.

Elizabeth McGaw, 87, died on February 25, 2007, following the removal at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

She was admitted from Heatherbank care home, in Balornock, in December 2006.

Mrs McGaw was admitted to hospital after swelling from her chin to her chest spread across her throat.

A postmortem examination later showed the cause of death to be heart disease and dementia.

Following a fatal accident inquiry at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Sheriff Bill Totten said in a written judgement: “In my view the evidence did not establish any basis to amend those findings.”
