Woman rescued from stream after being stuck in mud

A DOG walker had to rescued from a stream after becoming stuck in the mud trying to retrieve her pet.

The 49-year-old woman has been walking next to an embankment in Bathgate, West Lothian, today when her dog ran down to play in the water.

But when she went down the 20ft slope to retrieve her pet she ended up trapped in mud that came up to her knees.

The woman was walking next to a cycle path on the golf course near the town’s Castle Road.

When she realised she was in trouble she called the police for assistance who then contacted the fire brigade.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 12.30pm to a woman who required assistance at a cycle path in Wester Inch.

“She was uninjured and the fire service dealt with the matter.”

A Lothian and Borders Fire Service spokeswoman said: “We were called by the police at 12.31pm who alerted us to a woman who had fallen at a cycle path behind Castle Road in Bathgate.

“The 49-year-old had taken her dog down near the stream and her dog went into the water.

“She then tried to retrieve the dog but became stuck in the mud as she picked the dog up – she was in mud up to her knees.

“Fire crews were able to assist her without the need of the specialist line team.

“She was uninjured and required no hospital treatment.”

Last week another woman had to be rescued after going down an embankment.

Australian walker Jenny Edwards, 64, needed help after she slid 50 feet down a steep ravine.

She got into difficulties while walking in the grounds of Dalhousie Castle Hotel in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian.

She narrowly avoided falling a further 40ft onto rocks by grasping onto a tree trunk.
