The single occupant of the property was given first aid at the scene before being taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Firefighters were also called out to deal with a pan fire in a top floor flat in Great Michael Rise, Newhaven, just before 1am.

They used four breathing apparatus to enter the building and remove a man from the flat.
