A passerby found the woman at 12:15am and called the police.

Inspector Gill Geany, who is in charge of the investigation, said: “The woman is being treated at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh after apparently falling from a second-floor window.

“A 38-year-old man is currently helping us with our enquiries, however anyone who witnessed this incident is urged to call Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

It is believed the incident took place at a homeless hostel on the street run by Edinburgh Council.

The Access Point on Leith Street offers a housing, health and social care service to those who are have found themselves on the streets.

One neighbour who lives in a flat beside the hostel said: “There was about ten police cars here and a lot of police, but I’m not sure what happened.

“The whole street was cordoned off. That was at about 1am or just after midnight.”

Edinburgh Council declined to comment on the incident.
