Woman dies in Inverness house fire

A woman has died following a fire in a flat in Inverness this morning.

Four occupants from three neighbouring properties were evacuated as firefighters tackled the blaze, but no one else was injured.

The emergency services were called to Leyton Drive, Hilton, at about 7.45am.

Fire crews had the blaze extinguished within 40minutes.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Following emergency services attending a fire within a property on Leyton Drive, Hilton, earlier this morning, we can confirm that a woman has sadly died as a result of the fire.

“Police have spoken to members of the family and are currently in the process of contacting next of kin.”

The road has been closed and diversion put in place while a probe into the cause is carried out.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “A joint police and fire investigation will take place.”
