A woman has died and her daughter is in hospital following a hillwalking incident.

A mountain rescue operation was launched after a member of the public reported concerns for a woman who had been seen on a path leading from the Lairig Eilde car park towards Buachaille Etive Beag in the Glen Coe area at around 9.30am on Monday.

Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) went to the scene along with a Coastguard helicopter to help the woman.

While they where there the body of another woman aged 52 was found a short distance away.

Both women were recovered by the helicopter and taken to Fort William.

The first woman, understood to be the 52-year-old’s daughter, was taken to Belford Hospital where her condition is described as stable.

Sergeant Ross McCartney said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident.

“We are currently carrying out inquiries to establish the full circumstances. These inquiries are currently at an early stage.

“I would like to thank Glencoe MRT and HM Coastguard for their invaluable assistance with this challenging incident.”
