The victim entered the supermarket where staff contacted an ambulance. He was taken to the ERI where it was established he’d suffered a broken jaw and significant cuts to his face.

Police were contacted the following day and the man was transferred to St John’s hospital in Livingston where he continues to be treated.

Officers are now conducting local enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious in the area is asked to come forward.

The woman is described as white, 5ft 6ins tall with dyed blonde hair worn down. She was wearing a short white skirt and had a brown dog with her at the time.

A police spokesman said: “The victim has suffered some very painful injuries to his face, which will require some time to heal.

“We are still trying to determine exactly how the man sustained his injuries and what may have happened prior to the assault.”
