Officers are now appealing for anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity in the area to come forward and assist with their enquiries.

Inspector Michelle Ritchie said: “The occupant was not at home during this incident. Nevertheless, it was an unsettling experience for him to come home and discover his property had been targeted with a firearm.

“High-visibility patrols are currently being deployed in the Woodburn area to offer reassurance to the community and speak with local residents who may have information that can help with our investigation into this incident.

“The use of firearms remains incredibly rare in Midlothian and a thorough investigation is now underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding this discharge.

“Anyone who can assist us in tracing those responsible is asked to contact police immediately.”

Those with information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
