Winter storms head across US

A STORM that plagued the American Midwest for days swept into the north-east of the country and Canada yesterday, stranding hundreds of motorists on a southern Ontario highway and giving much of the region its first real taste of winter.

More snow was forecast or already falling last night in parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

The frigid temperatures also stretched well south, with hard freeze warnings in effect overnight in much of Florida. Hundreds of schools were closed or opening late.
