William tells of regrets that his mother never met Kate

The Duke of Cambridge has revealed that one of his regrets is that his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, will never meet his wife, Kate.

Diana was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997, four years before William met the duchess at St Andrews University, where they both studied.

The couple married at Westminster Abbey last April and the duke said it was difficult without his mother with him.

In an interview with an US TV show, he said: “It’s the one time since she’s died, where I’ve thought to myself it would be fantastic if she was here.

“And just how sad really for her, more than anything, not being able to see it. Because I think she would have loved the day and I think, hopefully, she’d be very proud of us both.”

The duke’s poignant tribute to Diana was echoed by his brother. Prince Harry described her as having the “best seat in the house” during the service.

The duke’s comments came as his wife attended the Buckingham Palace garden party yesterday along with the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
