'We're all 100% behind the tram project' - Twitter users offer dishonest Edinburgh tourist tips

EVERYONE is behind the tram project and the Fringe is a month-long hair-dressing competition. Just two examples from the torrent of fake Edinburgh tourist tips which have been appearing on social networking site Twitter today.

Edinburgh Castle: "built in 1961 by Sir Sean Connery"

The hashtag #edinburghliesfortourists became a trending topic for the whole of the UK earlier today, with famous landmarks and stories being at the butt of jokes by users.

The popularity of the strand of updates comes on the back of yesterday's #londonliesfortourists trend.

Now it's the turn of the Scottish capital, which prides itself as a tourist hotspot thanks to its historic city centre and major international festivals, to find itself at the centre of a Twitter storm.

The tongue-in-cheek comments range from the football rivalry between Hearts and Hibernian to the notorious tram project.

According to one tweet, the "next tram will be along very soon".

In reality, the tram project has ground to a halt, with recent reports that it may even be scrapped.

Edinburgh Castle does not escape the lies either. Twitter users have shortened its history considerably, with posts stating that it was built by James Bond actor Sir Sean Connery in 1961.

Of course, Sir Sean was not involved in the castle's construction, but you can still see the famous film star delivering milk in Fountainbridge every day, according to one user.

Another tweeted that on a clear day you can see over the Forth to the "Lost Kingdom" where woolly mammoths and sabre tooth tigers roam. But such prehistoric creatures have yet to be seen by locals of Fife.

"Edinburgh lies for tourists" would not be complete if the festival was not given a knocking.

According to some on Twitter, it is fine to just turn up in August and find a room. In reality, trying to find a room without booking during the festival is a nigh on impossible task.

It will also be a relief to some that extinct volcano Arthur's Seat is actually a secret military site. If Edinburgh is attacked it will burst open and shoot missiles at our enemies, according to some tweets.

Twitter should now act as a gentle warning to tourists in Edinburgh that, while Scotland's capital is indeed a city of contradictions and storytelling, you shouldn't believe everything you read.
