We'll be heroes when we hit zeroes

REPRESENTATIVES from construction, agriculture, education, retail, food and drink, community groups and local authorities joined rural affairs secretary Richard Lochhead at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena to promote the government's new zero-waste plan.

Tough new national targets require 70 per cent of all waste be recycled by 2025.

The government yesterday set out targets to find more environmentally sound solutions to disposing of the 20 million tonnes of waste produced a year in Scotland.

Edinburgh City Council which, with Midlothian Council is working on plans for a new waste treatment plant, welcomed the proposals.
