Storm Caroline: Space pictures show size of storm as it hits Scotland

Incredible images captured in space show the size of Storm Caroline as it sweeps across the UK.

Pictures from the University of Dundee Satellite Receiving Station over the last 72 hours show the progress of the tempest.

The images by the Meteosat satellite demonstrate that while the UK is dwarfed by the oncoming Caroline, named by the Met Office on Tuesday, 5 December, it is largely passed over.

However, this has not stopped the storm causing significant disruptions to Scotland’s infrastructure.

Severe gales and snow showers have caused travel disruption, school closures and power cuts as Storm Caroline sweeps into Scotland.

Forecasters are warning of a danger to life, with gusts of up to 90mph. Flights and ferry services have been cancelled while dozens of schools are closed across the north of the country. Rail passengers have also faced disruption, with trains cancelled after a trampoline blew onto the line in East Renfrewshire and services suspended elsewhere.
