Scotland’s weather: Country escapes worst of the snow

SCOTLAND looked set to escape the worst of the bad weather last night as the heaviest snow fell across England.

Only a few areas north of the Border saw any significant snowfall, with most on higher ground, while temperatures hovered just below freezing.

However, many sports fixtures were hard hit by the cold conditions. The Scottish Second Division was entirely wiped out, while the matches between Berwick and Peterhead and Elgin and Clyde were off in the Third Division.

In England, where the worst weather was experienced in central and eastern parts of the country, the freezing conditions caused widespread transport disruption. London’s Heathrow Airport announced yesterday that around a third of its flights would be cancelled today amid forecasts of up to 15cm of snow and freezing fog, while motoring organisations told drivers to stay at home.

Meteorologists warned that icy road conditions were likely today in Scotland. caused by a band of rain pushing across the country which is likely to fall on cold ground overnight. The weather is due to turn milder by the end of the weekend.
