Scotland weather: Ice and snow alerts as coldest night predicted

Drivers have been asked to take care on the roads as an icy blast is set to sweep across much of Scotland on Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow warning for ice across Grampian, Central Scotland, Tayside and Fife, as well as northern parts of England.

Forecasters predicted it could be the coldest night of the year so far as the mercury is set to plummet as low as -10C.

Icy patches are likely to develop on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, while wintry showers will bring an additional hazard.

Motorists have been told road temperatures could be 1C-2C lower than the air figures.

Higher ground can expect as much as 2 to 5 cm of snow, particularly on inland areas, with lower areas also prone to some snowfall.

Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services and drivers should proceed with caution.

Met Office spokesperson said that the week’s coldest temperatures will come on Thursday evening.

Forecaster Helen Roberts said: “We will potentially have some lying snow across the hills of Scotland and northern England and that always helps to keep temperatures down, so we could potentially see temperatures as low as -8C (17.6F), possibly -10C (14F), across parts of Scotland where there is lying snow by Thursday night.”
