Scotland experiences coldest September night since 1997

Altnaharra in the Highlands recorded -5C, the lowest since spring this year.

Scotland recorded its coldest night in September since 1997.

The temperature in Althaharra in the Highlands dropped to -5C overnight on Wednesday, 23 September, the lowest temperature since spring this year.

Boultenstone, in Aberdeenshire, held the previous record in 1997.

Weather experts at the Met Office confirmed the all time record was Dalwhinnie, in the Highlands, dropping down to -6.7 on September 26 in 1942.

Braemar, a village around 58 miles west of Aberdeen, is one of the coldest low lying settlements in the country.

On two occasions in the last 130 years the area has plunged to -27.2C, which remains a UK record.
