Skye, northern Argyll, Lochaber, western parts of Tayside and central Scotland have been issued with the alert.

Forecasters said outbreaks of rain will turn persistent and heavy and, coming on top of rainfalls during Thursday, could cause localised river flooding.

The weather warning will be in place until 9pm today, after which the rain is expected to become lighter.

Forecasters said heavy rain started to fall in the Western Isles overnight, turning to snow as temperatures fell.

Saturday is expected to be drier, with the possibility of rainfall only affecting parts of Scotland until early Saturday morning.
