Waverley ‘worst in Britain’ for anti-social crimes

British Transport Police recorded 191 crimes involving anti-social behaviour - which includes alcohol-related offences - at the station, the second-largest in the United Kingdom behind London Waterloo, in the year ending in August.

A total of 333 crimes were recorded at Waverley.

Earlier this year, a former Scottish Government worker was jailed after he was caught taking ‘upskirt’ photos at the station, while in April an 18-year-old man was punched on one of the platforms after arriving from Cowdenbeath.

In January 2014, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request revealed that there had been more than 700 crimes committed at the station in 2012 and 2013 - but Glasgow Central was named the worst station fro crime in a Scotland-wide list of crime hotspots.

Anti-social behaviour was the most common offence.

During this period, Glasgow Central officers recorded 149 crimes - the second worst station in Britain - while anti-social behaviour crimes at Glasgow Queen Street totalled 83, placing it seventh on the list.

A total of 322 crimes were reported at Glasgow Central, including 53 violent and sexual offences.

During the 12 month period, more than 11,000 crimes were committed in Britain’s 100 busiest stations.

The worst station for crime was London St Pancras - 764 offences including 62 violent or sexual crimes and 22 offences involving weapons were recorded.
