Warning of fiddlers on the roof

AN elderly man was conned out of thousands of pounds by bogus callers who took cash to repair his roof but never carried out the work.

The con men targeted the victim at his home in March Road, Blackhall, claiming they would work on his roof.

After providing an initial estimate, the culprits returned to demand more cash, claiming that they needed materials, then a VAT bill had to be settled, and finally to request a signature confirming that the work had been done.

Door-to-door inquiries are under way in the area, with officers keen to speak to anyone who may have been approached by the men.

There are no descriptions of the suspects available.

A police spokesman said: “Any genuine worker would be happy to provide details of their company, and would not have an issue with you verifying their identity.”
