The brief clip, available on the Scot’s Instagram account, was published earlier this afternoon and shows Murray in relaxed mood after Sunday’s historic achievement.

“Thanks a lot everyone for your support,” said Murray. “over not just these last few weeks, but all the years.

He added: “It’s much appreciated and helped me get through yesterday especially, so thank you again.”

The clip, which has already been viewed by several thousand, was met by a flood of messages congratulating Britain’s first Wimbledon champion in 77 years.

One Instagram user, summing up the feelings of a nation, said: “Congratulations Andy! It’s been a while coming, and we knew you could do it! I hope now you can have some time to relax.”
