Veteran television actor Donald Hewlett dies, aged 90

Donald Hewlett, best known for his role in the 1970s sitcom It Ain't Half Hot Mum, has died aged 90.

The actor, who played Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Reynolds in the show, had been ill for some time. He died at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in west London on Saturday.

Hewlett was also known for his role as Lord Meldrum, master of the house in 1990s BBC sitcom You Rang M'Lord?

He began his on-screen career with a small part in the 1954 comedy film Orders are Orders, starring Peter Sellers. Hewlett went on to star in numerous TV shows including The Saint, The Avengers and Doctor Who.

It Ain't Half Hot Mum was set in British India and Burma towards the end of the Second World War and ran on BBC 1 from 1974-1981.
