Vet gets on her motorbike

A VET is planning an epic 3000-mile motorbike ride to raise £125,000 for an international animal welfare charity.

Dr Caroline Hahn, a senior lecturer at Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at Edinburgh University, is part of a team of five vets that will be setting out from the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, home to the Queen’s carriage horses, next Wednesday. Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes will wave them off.

The team, dubbed Vets with Horsepower, will trek across Europe and North Africa on their motorbikes, giving lectures at eight veterinary schools in return for donations to the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA).

Donations will be used to help SPANA provide more free veterinary treatment for working horses, donkeys and mules in Mali and Mauritania.

Caroline, who has taken part in two similar fundraisers in the UK for equine charities, said: “The previous fundraisers were test-runs compared to this summer’s project, where I’ll have just two and a half weeks to travel 3000 miles from Scotland, through Europe into Africa, and back via Spain.”
