Vegetarian restaurant wins award in anniversary year

A GROUNDBREAKING vegetarian dining business in the Capital has been honoured in its 50th year.

Henderson’s, which was the first vegetarian eatery in Edinburgh, won the judges’ special award in The List’s annual eating and drinking awards.

The accolade was given to Henderson’s in recognition of the “outstanding contribution” the establishment has made to dining in the city over the past 50 years.

Janet Henderson opened a vegetarian food shop in 1962, and opened a restaurant a year later.

The business has now grown to include a bistro, bakery, deli and gallery, while the restaurant is a cultural hub, popular with actors, writers and musicians.

Newer businesses in the Capital were also successful in The List awards. Japanese-themed Grindlay Street restaurant Kanpai, was given a best newcomer award and Indian restaurant Mithas, in Dock Place, was also recognised.
