US student dies on islands project

An AMERICAN student has collapsed and died during a research trip to Shetland.

Evan Dube, 19, from Plaistow, New Hampshire, died on Saturday on a Lerwick beach. The classics student was with a group of ten from Bates College in Maine who were taking part in the Shetland Islands Climate and Settlement Project, an archaeological research project.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said: “The group were on the beach intending to have a barbecue around 9pm. Shortly afterwards, Evan went into the water and after coming ashore appears to have collapsed.”

He was airlifted to hospital, but he later died.

The spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances and a report would be submitted to the procurator-fiscal.

Students at the college held a memorial on the campus.
