Professor Richardson said: “Ally’s death has come as a terrible shock to his friends and teachers in St Andrews.

“I know that his loss will be very sorely felt across our community, coming as it does just a few days after the death of Lewis Greig.

Mr Greig, 21, from Kirkcaldy, died in Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, last Saturday, after being taken ill. His death was announced on Monday.

Mr Greig’s death is thought to have been drugs-related.

No reason has been given for the death of Mr Smith.
