Union attacks forensics cuts

A SHAKE-UP of Scotland's forensic crime laboratories which will see 74 jobs axed and Edinburgh's lab downgraded has been condemned by public services union Unison.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill announced a move away from the current four labs to two in Glasgow and Dundee, with only "satellite" units in Edinburgh and Aberdeen and a further review in 18 months.

Unison's regional organiser Peter Veldon condemned the move. He said: "The reduction will affect the quality of service in drug analysis. We would welcome a genuine review in 18 months, but are concerned this is code for a future attempt to cut service."

Lothians MSP Ian McKee said he was pleased the Edinburgh lab would remain open and not lose as many services as originally envisaged.
