Uni team ‘key’ in anti-bigotry bid

EXPERTS from Edinburgh University have been named as part of a group set up to form a “key plank” of efforts to eradicate sectarianism in Scotland.

Community safety minister Roseanna Cunningham said that an independent advisory group was being established to look at the issue.

It will be chaired by Dr Duncan Morrow, an academic working in Northern Ireland who has also studied in Scotland. Other members include Dr Cecilia Clegg, a lecturer in practical theology at Edinburgh University, and
Dr Michael Rosie, who is co-director of its institute of
government.

Ms Cunningham said: “We are committed to eradicating the scourge of sectarianism from Scottish society and we have been testing out a variety of approaches to help us achieve this.

“The establishment of the advisory group on tackling
sectarianism in Scotland will form a key plank of this wider work.”

The Reverend Ian Galloway, a former convener of the Church of Scotland’s Church and Society Council, and Margaret Lynch, a former chief executive of the Scottish Mediation Network, will also be involved.

Dr Morrow said he was “honoured” to chair the new group on the “important but controversial topic” of sectarianism.
