THE technology is most commonly used by police to help track down some of the country’s most wanted criminals.
But scientists have come up with a novel use of e-fit computer technology – using it to create the faces of the most beautiful man and woman in the world.
The pictures are the result of a two-month study led by Dr Chris Solomon, a world expert in facial mapping, that asked people to put together a composite of the perfect face using the EFIT-V PhotoFit software used by UK police.
The software takes into account factors including the thickness of lips, nose length and width, and hairline. Those results were then judged by another 100 people who rated them for attractiveness, allowing researchers to create these composite pictures showing the archetypal faces of male and female beauty.
Footballer David Beckham, and actors Daniel Craig and Colin Firth often top the polls for attractive celebrity men in the UK, with Keira Knightly, Kate Winslet and model Kate Moss considered among the best looking females.
According to the results of the e-fit computer programming project, males and females perceive beauty in very different ways.
The study found that women rated a soft jaw-line, slim face, fuller lips and clean-shaven look as the most attractive features in males, while men considered a more masculine appearance attractive.
Women found females with full lips, slim faces and large eyes to be most attractive – more so that the male population.
Dr Solomon said the study, commissioned by Samsung to mark the launch of its new Galaxy S6 phone, revealed “some interesting results about what Brits consider to be the epitome of beauty”.
He said: “It’s important to note that these are the idealised faces according to those living in the UK, so a study in Asia or Africa for example would no doubt have different results.”
The academic said the study also threw up some differences between men’s and women’s perceptions of ideal beauty.
He said: “For the male face of beauty, women drew a more feminine face than men –women rate a softer jaw-line, slimmer face, fuller lips and clean-shaven look as the most attractive, compared to the more masculine appearance that is considered the most attractive by men.
“Interestingly, for the female face of beauty, women rated a sexier appearance as the most beautiful as opposed to their male counterparts – women perceived fuller lips, a slimmer face, larger eyes and higher cheekbones as the most beautiful, more so than the male population.”
Mugshot images of attractive prisoners have garnered internet popularity over the past few years.
Jeremy Meeks, who was charged with possession of a firearm in America, was offered a modelling contract after his picture was shared thousands of times on social media. Labelled a “hot convict”, Meeks first caught the public’s attention when his mugshot was posted last year on the Stockton Police Department’s Facebook page.
Meagan Mccullough, also from America, found herself in the spotlight after her drink driving mugshot was shared on social media labelled “Guilty – of taking my breath away”.
