UK 'won't bow to bullying' from China over Noble prize ceremony

The UK will not "succumb" to pressure from the Chinese over this year's Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, MPs were told yesterday.

The Nobel committee has awarded the prestigious prize to jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, sparking anger in Beijing.

Commons leader Sir George Young said the UK and its allies should send strong representations to next month's Nobel ceremony in Oslo "so that the Chinese understand that on this one they are alone".

Former Europe minister Denis MacShane said: "The Chinese are bullying countries like mad not to turn up."
