Welcome for driver eyesight regulation

New rules meaning licences can be revoked within hours of a driver failing a sight test have been welcomed by the mother of a 16-year-old killed by an elderly motorist.

Jackie McCord has been campaigning for a change in the law since the death of her daughter, Cassie, in February 2011. She collected 20,000 signatures calling for police officers to be allowed to temporarily suspend driving licences from motorists they feel are unfit to drive.

Cassie was killed when a car mounted a pavement in Colchester, Essex, and hit her as she walked with a friend.

Three days earlier, police had spent two hours trying to persuade the 87-year-old man responsible not to drive again after he was involved in a minor collision and failed an eye test.
