NIGEL FARAGE has given up beer for January, admitting “I need a break” from drinking.

The Ukip leader, who made posing with a pint a key part of his image as he wooed voters away from the traditional Westminster political parties, said he stopped drinking before New Year.

He said he would continue to smoke, although he admitted he would “think about” giving up cigarettes later this year.

Mr Farage said the next time he is seen on the campaign trail in a pub he will have a glass of orange juice in his hand.

He told Sky News he started his dry period before New Year: “I am not being particularly virtuous about this. I need a break and it does us all good to have a break every now and again.”

Asked about giving up cigarettes, he said: “Oh no, I’ll think about that later on in the year.”
