UK spends £116m on London jobs subsidies

The UK government has spent more than £116 million to subsidise London-based staff, prompting calls to disperse civil service jobs more widely.

The SNP, which obtained the annual figures, urged ministers to make a start by basing the new Green Investment Bank in Scotland.

The Department for Work and Pensions estimates an additional £45.3m is spent on 14,025 staff in London, while the figures are £10.9m for 4,908 Ministry of Defence civilian staff. Extra spending at the Home Office totalled £22m.

Details were obtained through parliamentary questions to ministers at Westminster.
