UK ‘has Jordan assurances’

Jordanian officials have given the government “all the assurances it needs” to deport radical cleric Abu Qatada.

Home affairs select committee chairman Keith Vaz said the officials told him they had written to Home Secretary Theresa May offering the assurances the Home Office was seeking.

Terrorist suspect Qatada was released after human rights judges in Europe ruled he could not be deported without assurances that evidence gained through torture would not be used against him.

Mr Vaz said: “It now appears the Jordanian authorities have given our government all the assurances it needs.”
