TUC step up campaign against cuts

UNION leaders will today discuss campaigns against the government’s controversial austerity measures against a backdrop of industrial action being planned by different groups of workers.

The TUC general council will hear updates on a three-month long campaign of action by members of the Public and Commercial Services union over jobs, pay and terms and conditions, strikes planned by teachers from June over pay, pensions and workload, as well as disputes involving postal workers.

Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) in hundreds of Crown Post Offices will stage a third strike on Monday over jobs, pay and closures, while the union is to ballot over 120,000 of its members on whether to boycott the mail of rival firms to the Royal Mail, which could lead to millions of undelivered items every day.

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “We will not stand by and see services cut and workers walked over.

“Just so there’s no confusion, let me be clear – the TUC will back the CWU all the way. The TUC will always back our unions, including over co-ordinated industrial action wherever unions want it and whenever workers vote for it.”
