Titanic anniversary: Descendants pay tribute to relatives lost at sea

DESCENDANTS of people who died when the Titanic sank 100 years ago paid tribute to them today.

They threw flowers on the dockside where the famous ship departed on its journey on April 10th, 1912.

A minute’s silence was held for those who died when the vessel - which was on its way to New York - hit an iceberg and sank on its first voyage.

More than 1,500 people were killed.

Today, a recording of the vessel’s whistle played at noon as around 650 people gathered to pay tribute.

Southampton was badly hit, with a death toll with 549 - more than a third of the total - from the city dying in the tragedy.

Civic dignitaries also paid their respects in the ceremony hosted by television personality Fred Dinenage, whose great uncle James Richard Dinenage - a first class steward - died on the Titanic aged 47.
