St Andrews University: Three students thrown out and 20 others disciplined for alleged sexual misconduct

Three students have been expelled – and 20 others disciplined – for breaching sexual misconduct rules at the University of St Andrews in the last five years.

The Courier reports that none of the 42 complaints brought to the attention of university bosses in that period were reported to police.

Now, police have urged anyone who has been the victim of a sexual offence of any kind during their time at Scotland's oldest university to contact them.

Over the summer, more than 20 allegations of serious sexual assault and rape were posted on an Instagram page called St Andrews Survivors.

The Freedom of Information request obtained by The Courier confirmed that a total of 20 students have been disciplined by the University of St Andrews since 2016 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Three were expelled after having their studies terminated.

Detective Inspector Kelly McEwan, of Police Scotland’s Fife Division Public Protection Unit, said: “Tackling this kind of crime is a priority and reports of sexual offences are treated with sensitivity and professionalism with victims being supported by specialist officers.

“We will listen to all reports made to us and they will all be thoroughly investigated.”
