‘Squeezed’ motorists are paying high price for Shell profits rise

FUEL campaigners and motoring groups have expressed anger after oil giant Shell announced increased profits of £4.75 billion for the past three months.

The total for January to March, coinciding with drivers suffering record pump prices, was 11 per cent higher than a year ago.

Shell said the profits were essential for production growth.

However, FairFuelUK said the boom had come at the expense of increasingly squeezed drivers. Spokesman Peter Carroll said: “It seems that everyone is doing well out of fuel except the hard-pressed motorists and businesses that actually use fuel.

“The oil companies are doing well, the speculators are doing well and the [UK] government is raking in a fortune at 82p per litre in duty and VAT.

“It’s essential the government have a sea change of thinking. They have to get the duty down.”
