Spoof paper calls for Scots embassy in Yorkshire

CHEEKY pranksters have suggested Scotland’s UK embassy after independence could be located on the Yorkshire village of Ainley Top.

A spoof 8-page glossy newletter distributed on behalf of the fictional English council of Kirkdale says Scottish diplomats could take advantage of the village’s Toby Carvery with its £5.99 roasts, while their wives could source “dead-posh frocks” from the nearby House of Elliot.

The mock newsletter states: “On 21st July, elected members from across Yorkshire will converge on Kirkdale Town Hall in Huddersfield to formalise an offer to a parliament of an independent Scotland: a site for the Scottish Embassy to the UK.”

The tongue-in-cheek publication suggests plans are already “well advanced” to serve a compulsory purchase order (CPO) on Ainley Top’s four-star Cedar Court Hotel to be “gifted to a new Scottish nation” as an embassy.

“Ainley Top has all the facilities a foreign diplomatic service could wish for,” spoof council leader Bradley Moffat adds.

“And the connections to the M62 just can’t be beaten. It’s not called Ainley Top for nothing”.

Scottish independence could even fan the flames of Yorkshire separatism.

The spoof adds: “If Scotland says Yes, the pressure for Yorkshire to be granted its own vote on independence in 2015, will become irresistible.”
