Scottish DJs culled from Radio 1 after budget cuts

Scottish DJs Edith Bowman and Ally McRae are leaving Radio 1 as a result of BBC budget cuts.

Edith Bowman is thought to be the highest profile DJ to leave as part of the cull on the station’s DJs. Ally MacRae is also reported to be on the way out,

Bowman, from Anstruther, Fife has been with the station for over a decade and has presented the Morning and Afternoon shows, as well as The Review show. While MacRae presented BBC Introducing.

The departures will leave the Station without any major Scottish talent but according to the BBC the cuts were necessary, as they will allow Radio 1 to save money and invest in targeting younger listeners. A spokesman for the company told the Daily Record: “Tough decisions have been made but the strategy remains for the station to continue to innovate and invent new ways to reach their younger audience.”

Radio 1 and 1Xtra Controller Ben Cooper added: “These cuts to our budgets are hurting. It means I have had to make tough choices and say goodbye to some friends and respected colleagues.”
