Scots nurses stressed by ‘feeling undervalued’

Nurses can feel more stressed from being undervalued rather than from the demands of their job, a study has revealed.

New research carried out with 100 nurses at a major Scottish teaching hospital showed the health workers were not fazed by the tasks they carried out.

The type of work they were doing, such as dealing with patients or communicating with other health professionals, did not greatly affect how they felt, instead it was what they thought about the work that was important.

Professor Derek Johnston, from Aberdeen University, said: “Our results show that feelings of stress are more likely to be due to how the work is perceived rather than the work itself.

“Being a health professional is stressful so there’s a lot of interest in what determines that stress.”
