Schoolboys arrested over murder

TWO schoolboys have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a homeless man who was found dead in a churchyard.

The youths, aged 15, were detained yesterday by officers investigating the death of 59-year-old George Akers in Darlington.

His body was found under a tree in the grounds of St Cuthbert's Church on 12 June. His death was not initially regarded as suspicious until a postmortem examination revealed he had sustained multiple internal injuries. Officers later said he was the victim of a "sustained and brutal attack".

Detectives said he died in the spot where he had slept for the previous few weeks. Detective Superintendent Neil Malkin, who is leading the murder investigation, said at the time: "He was vulnerable, and spent most of his time in the company of others who were also vulnerable."
