Researchers also found a new haircut, a slice of cake and bagging a bargain help to make the average woman’s day.

Using “freebie” samples, watching a favourite TV show without interruptions and enjoying a glass of wine were also named among the top female delights.

The study found men look forward to a catch-up with their fathers, lie-ins and watching football with friends.

Perhaps surprisingly, a number of “sensitive” pleasures made the top 20 list among men including scenic views, treating the family and the sound of rainfall.

The study of 2,000 adults was commissioned by cake producer Mr Kipling to reveal the happiness triggers for British men and women.

Spokeswoman Claire Harrison-Church said: “The research shows the little things really do make the difference in life and it doesn’t take much to make our day that little bit better.

“It can be a hectic world and sometimes things can get on top of us, but whether it’s a favourite show, a slice of cake or enjoying a welcome treat, the results show certain small things make a big difference.”

The study examined what makes day-to-day life better and found “showing kindness” and “laughing a lot” as the most likely factors to achieve a positive outlook.

Many also thought it was particularly important for people to be simply happy in their own skin.

An occasional treat, appreciating the small things and a loving relationship were cited as other important factors.

The research also saw Britons reveal what makes their relationships better - with good communication, honesty and the occasional surprise deemed crucial.

A slice of cake tops the treat list to give to partners.

Ms Harrison-Church added: “Clearly there’s a difference between what women and men find brightens their day but there are some strong similarities too, with being around those you love, getting to relax and treating yourself to small things common themes in both lists.. Making time to enjoy ourselves and even savour the occasional treat is important in living a full life.

“As the results show, so many people believe that a little treat can go a long way, whether in our work, relationships or day to day life.’’
