Police find body in search for missing Amber Peat

Amber Peat was last seen at home in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire at 5:30pm on Saturday.

Officers were last night at the scene of the find in the town.

A police spokesman said: “Amber’s family has been informed and we ask that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.

“Officers are at the scene in Mansfield and inquiries are on-going. No formal identification has yet taken place.”

Amber’s parents had earlier issued an emotional plea for her to return home.

Her mother and stepfather both broke down in tears as they spoke at a police news conference yesterday, saying that her disappearance was out of character.

They confirmed that Amber had left without her mobile phone or any money.

Ms Peat said: “If you’re watching this or anybody knows where she is, just send her home please.”

Mr Peat added: “Just come home. We just want you home.”

Nottinghamshire Police’s Superintendent Matt McFarlane said earlier in the day: “She’s a young girl. In the past, she’s been out of the house perhaps for a few hours but never anything like this. This is totally out of character.”

Amber’s stepfather had added: “She doesn’t really go out. She wants to read a book. If she gets five minutes she’ll sit down anywhere and read a book.”

Officers taking part in the search had been focusing on a one-kilometre radius of the family home in the belief that there was a good chance Amber had not gone further afield.

The Peats had returned from a holiday in Cornwall on Friday.

Mr Peat said: “We had just all had a brilliant holiday. It’s just not right. She had a fantastic time, never stopped laughing with all of us together.”

He added: “We told her to clean a cool box out we had had sandwiches in for the journey home. It was a chore, basically, and I’m sure all teenagers are the same – she didn’t want to do a chore. That was the last conversation.”

Ms Peat said: “We were in the living room and I heard the front door slam. I heard the door and when I went out I couldn’t see her anywhere. She had just gone.”

She said Amber was not in contact with her natural father, who lives in Scotland.

Mr Peat praised the efforts of people in trying to find Amber, saying that more than 300 people had been searching for her.
