THE Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, are viewed from an unusual perspective in this picture taken by Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers on board the International Space Station between Antarctica and Australia.

The visual effect is produced by collisions of charged particles high in the atmosphere.
