Pastor arrested after Scots wife found dead in bath

Charmaine Adusah, who was three months pregnant and originally from Arbroath, Angus, was discovered in a hotel in Ghana where she had been attending a religious event with self-proclaimed prophet Eric Isaiah Adusah.

According to the Ghanian Daily Guide newspaper, the couple had a disagreement over how long they would stay in the country, with her wanting to remain longer.

They checked in at the Royal Mac Dic Hotel in Koforidua in the middle of March for five days but the next morning Mr Adusah said he had an engagement in the UK and left.

He told reception that his wife, whose maiden name was Spiers, did not want to be disturbed, but after three days hotel staff became concerned and entered the room.

Mrs Adusah was found “lying prostrate with a white towel wrapped around her, almost in a decomposed state”, according to a spokesman for the criminal investigation department at the police headquarters in  Koforidua.

Mr Adusah, a leader of Tottenham-based Global Light Revival Ministries, is being held on suspicion of murder.

Mrs Adusah studied at Swansea University before working as a radiographer in the NHS.

She already had an eight-year-old son from a previous relationship in Wales. It is understood the boy was staying with his father at the time.

A close friend, Christine Stephen, from Camberley,  Surrey, who has known Mrs Adusah since childhood, said that her family in Arbroath did not hear about her death until  21 March.

She said: “I spoke to Charmaine’s family and they said Eric had been in touch on that Saturday to say she had died.

“He said he was flying back to Ghana to identify her body on Sunday.”

He also told them he had returned to England because he had a church event he had to attend. The Global Light Revival Ministries, founded by Adusah in 2010, is a revivalist evangelical movement registered as a British charity and has received more than £1 million in donations. It hosts gatherings across the UK and Ireland.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: “We confirm the death of a British national in Ghana. Mr Adusah has not requested consular assistance.”

It is understood the couple had travelled to Ghana early this month so Adusah could preach at a three-day religious conference hosted by controversial evangelist “Bishop” John Yaw Adu, who is known for chaining up mentally ill patients at “prayer camps”.

Local reports claim Adusah and his wife argued at the start of the trip and he had booked himself into a budget motel alone, leaving her to stay with Bishop Yaw Adu.

After the conference ended, the couple apparently reconciled and checked into the Mac- Dic Royal Plaza Hotel for five days on 16 March.
