Out-of-this-world prize for top talent

BRITAIN’S Got Talent prepared for blast-off yesterday as the first auditions for the new series began, with the winner promised an out-of-this-world prize.

Television supremo Simon Cowell has offered the star uncovered from among the thousands of hopefuls the chance to perform in space, thanks to Sir Richard Branson’s space venture, Virgin Galactic.

Cowell appeared on the red carpet at The Lowry theatre in Salford, Greater Manchester, with his new line-up of judges, including Alesha Dixon, poached from BBC rival programme, Strictly Come Dancing.

Cowell said: “We nicked her – but she wanted to come on the show.”

He has returned to the talent show this year with the promise to “get back to basics” after falling ratings for his money-spinning X Factor shows on both sides of the Atlantic.

He said: “I have worked in this business a long time. You have got to be a big boy about it and get back to basics.

“The idea of the first person to perform in space is brilliant. I love it.”

Asked for his hopes for the show this year, he replied: “Somebody who can be a star all over the world – that’s all I want. I’m positive–ish.”
